Job Purpose
- The maintenance and repair of protection relays, instruments and test equipment, location of cable faults and testing of electrical plant.
Key Responsibility Areas
- Maintenance and testing on the electrical reticulation.
- The testing, repair and calibration of equipment/relays/etc.
- Design and construction of electrical circuits and modification of existing circuits in the distribution network.
- Usage of the high voltage laboratory for testing as required.
- Install and wire protection relays and protection schemes.
- Participate on an official standby roster for after- hour call outs to faults to ensure that consumer outages are kept to a minimum.

Essential Requirements
- Trade Tested Artisan (Electrician) accredited by the relevant body under the Department of Higher Education and Training.
- Be in possession of a NTC2 or NCV3 in Electrical Engineering from a Further Education and Training College, registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training.
- Valid motor vehicle driving license
- Valid First Aid Certificate or be trained within 6 months from date of appointment.
- Must be authorised in terms of eThekwini Electricity’s System Operating Regulations to operate on Medium Voltage systems up to and including 11 kV or be in a position to be authorised within 9 months of appointment if required to undertake switching.
- Must be a Competent Person in terms of eThekwini Municipality’s Safety Rules for
- MVLV Underground Mains; and b) MVLV Substation Maintenance.
- Must be required to pass a departmental proficiency test.
- Apprentice route Must provide documented proof of having served a recognised
- apprenticeship prior to undergoing the trade test.
- ARPL route Must provide documented proof of at least 3 years relevant practical experience at the level of an Electrician and working under the direct supervision of a Competent
- Electrician, in diverse aspects of construction, operation, and maintenance of distribution and or transmission networks prior to undergoing the Trade Test.
- 4 years post Trade Test experience in the Electricity Supply and Distribution industry.

- 5 years post Trade Test experience in the Electricity Supply and Distribution industry.
