Suitable candidates must possess the following minimum qualifications and skills:
- Honors Degree (Geology / Geotechnical Engineering / Rock Engineering
- COM Strata Control Certificate
Suitable candidates must have the following work experience:
- 1-2 years’ experience in the relevant field
- Basic computer literacy
- Basic Strata Control
- Section 22 and 23 of MHSA
- Basic use of numerical modelling software
- Use of mine planning software and geological software
- Measuring and computing
- Reporting
- Communication, verbal and written
- Installation of monitoring devices
The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not be limited to:
- Conduct routine, ad-hoc or requested inspections to examine, monitor and assess the safety, stability and condition of travelling ways and working places.
- Investigate incidents and accidents caused by rock-related instability, as well as cases of changes in, or unusual, rock mass condition or behaviour.
- Participate in start-up assessments and issue-based risk assessments as part of a cross-functional team.
- Collect, capture and process Rock Engineering data and maintain a geotechnical database. Assess geotechnical conditions based on processed data.
- Conduct localized stability analyses and issue appropriate recommendations to ensure excavation safety and stability.
- Install instrumentation to monitor rock mass behaviour and support performance as part of the overall ground control monitoring strategy. Where required, record, review and interpret results.
- Monitor activities relating to the mining process including drilling patterns, charging and timing, sockets, effectiveness of smooth wall blasting, compliance to re-entry procedures, cleaning and support.
- Provide input into local excavation layouts, based on the mine’s design protocols and standards.
- Assist with the compilation and / or updating of the mandatory COP, as well as assist with the compilation and / or revision of related standards and procedures.
- Check that support units meet quality specifications (store yard checks, field testing and / or laboratory testing where needed).
- Investigate requests (TARP Yellow) and assess need for support work to be conducted by specialist Rock Engineering contractors, either recommend appropriate support or escalate.
- Provide on-the-job coaching to workers and supervisors in the workplace during underground visits.
- Participate in investigations of relevant new technology and monitor trials.
- Communicate with production and other service department staff, both verbally and by means of detailed written reports.
- Monitor and report on compliance to COP and associated standards and procedures.
- Statutory reporting to 14.1.8 Competent Person, comply with departmental procedures and maintain relevant administrative and filing systems.
