Job Purpose
- The effective design, planning and analysis of complex protection systems to ensure a high quality of electricity supply, as well as the efficient control and functioning of the Protection Engineering Division.
Key Responsibility Areas
- Development, implementation and maintenance of an overall protection strategy.
- Supervising, training, developing and disciplining of staff.
- Preparation of capital and operating budget and control thereof.
- Manages, controls and audits the computerisation and maintenance of records and drawings, and the production of statistics.
- Preparing and implementation of applicable departmental policies and compliance with codes of practice, safety rules and other standing orders.
- Liaise with other authorities, departments and divisions.
- Undertake complex studies of system stability and analysis of results.
- Network analysis and calculation of system faults levels.
- Calculation of protection settings and setting of all protection equipment in the field.
- Research and investigate protection systems mal-operations and operational sequences.
- Approve all protection scheme wiring additions and alterations undertaken.
- Coordination of all activities relating to the up-dating and maintenance of all computerised protection schematic diagrams.
- Auditing of all protection systems and equipment.
- Appointment in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (1993) and Regulations.
- Management, control and granting of permission to other departments for protection additions and alterations in the network.
- Design and planning of new protection systems for high and medium voltage networks.
- Development of protection related performance criteria.

Essential Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Bachelor of Engineering (NQF Level 8) in Electrical Engineering
- Registered as a Professional Electrical Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
- Must pass a proficiency test set by the department to prove sufficient general knowledge of
- Power Systems Protection theory.
- Must be in possession of a valid First Aid certificate or be able to obtain one within 6 months of the date of appointment.
- Valid motor vehicle driving license
- 7 years post registration experience in the Electricity Distribution or Transmission industry.
