- We are in search of a Commercial Manager: Governance and Controls to join our Commercial Division. The role will be based in Westville and report to the Commercial Executive.
- The purpose of the role is to lead the governance, administration, and strategic oversight of sales-related costs across the business. This role ensures that all sales expenditures are justified, transparent, and aligned with commercial objectives, while supporting the development and enforcement of trading terms, cost controls, and performance reporting.
Minimum Requirements
- Minimum 5 years in Commercial Finance, Sales Operations, or related roles.
- Strong understanding of sales cost structures and trading terms.
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial modelling.
- Proficiency in ERP/CRM systems (e.g., SAP, Salesforce) and BI tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau).
- Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or related field.
- CIMA, CA(SA), or equivalent professional qualification.
- Experience in FMCG, retail, or B2B sales environment
Duties & Responsibilities
Policy Development
- Define and maintain governance policies for sales costs and trading terms.
- Enforce governance frameworks for customer spend, ensuring compliance with internal policies and external regulations.
Forecasting & Financial Planning
- Collaborate with Growth, Commercial, and Finance teams on annual and quarterly forecasts.
- Forecast promotional and incentive spend using pipeline and market data.
- Prepare year-end accrual packs and reconcile actual vs. accrued spend.
- Input into reports on customer profitability, spend trends, and ROI.
- Use financial data to guide decision-making and strategic adjustments
Cost Tracking, Categorization & Controls
- Implement systems to track promotional sales costs
- Ensure accurate allocation of costs across regions, products, and channels.
- Monitor spend against budget and flag variances.
- Conduct periodic audits and maintain audit trails.
Trading Term & Contract Governance
- Maintain a centralized repository of customer trading terms and agreements.
- Ensure terms are financially sound, documented, and consistently applied.
- Track expiry, renewal, renegotiation timelines, and utilization.
- Collaborate with Legal and Finance to ensure contracts are auditable and enforceable.
Customer Spend Analysis & Optimization
- Monitor and analyze customer spending patterns and profitability.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities and optimize discount structures.
- Flag accounts with declining margins or excessive spend.
Reporting, Dashboards & Insights
- Develop dashboards for cost-to-revenue ratios, ROI, and compliance.
- Provide monthly spend reports and executive summaries.
- Support governance forums with insights and recommendations.
Training, Communication & Support
- Train teams on cost governance policies and tools.
- Communicate updates and provide quick-reference guides.
- Foster a culture of accountability and ownership.
- Provide helpdesk support and onboarding refreshers.
Performance Management & Accountability
- Include cost administration duties in job descriptions and performance reviews.
- Reward cost-efficient behaviour and address non-compliance.
- Escalate issues to leadership and governance forums.
Credit Management
- Support the Credit Management in the development of processes and reporting frameworks that enhance visibility, accountability, and governance of customer-related credit decisions
Year-End & Completeness Controls
- Ensure spend is recorded in the correct accounting period.
- Reconcile actual spend vs. accrued amounts and explain variances.
- Prepare year-end accrual pack with supporting calculations and approvals.
- Ensure alignment with external audit requirements.
