We are looking for someone with the following experience, qualifications and /or skillsets:
- Curro Holdings is a JSE-listed independent schooling provider that offers quality education from the early childhood development phase to Grade 12. - Curro Holdings seeks to appoint a Head of Department: Afrikaans (full-time) at HeronBridge College in Fourways to commence duties in May 2026
- The Department Head is responsible for managing their academic department, overseeing the curriculum, and guiding a team of specialist teachers to uphold high academic standards. The role encompasses curriculum development, staff management, quality assurance, and direct teaching to shape learners into well-rounded, 21st-century citizens. The incumbent teaches and coordinates relevant subjects according to IEB and Curro requirements.
Key Responsibilities & Performance Areas:
Curriculum Leadership & Administration
- Align and update curriculum policies with IEB and Curro standards
- Liaise with Curro Head Office subject specialists throughout the academic year
- Manage curriculum planning for all grades and assessment cycles
- Provide guidance on curriculum sequencing, concept delivery, and curriculum challenges
- Oversee subject-specific requirements, paper-setting, and systemic testing
- Moderate assessment tools and maintain centralised subject files
- Select and manage resources, textbooks, and budgets as per departmental needs
Academic Standards & Departmental Management
- Take ownership of academic performance and quality for the subject
- Manage consistent recording of learner portfolios and departmental systems
- Lead departmental compliance for assessments and reporting
Team Management & Mentoring
- Lead recruitment/interviewing of subject teachers and offer recommendations
- Mentor and manage teachers, facilitating their growth and upskilling
- Address staff discipline in consultation with academic leadership
- Deliver pastoral support and mediate intra-department issues
- Oversee teacher planning, classroom management, and delivery of extra academic lessons
- Monitor teacher and pupil progress, implementing interventions as required
- Conduct class visits and feedback sessions to sustain teaching excellence
- Institute academic registers, extra lessons, policy/process adherence
Extra-Curricular Coordination
- Oversee administration and support for subject olympiads, public speaking, entrepreneurs’ days, and other enrichment activities
- Manage extra lesson programmes and nominate pupils for awards based on achievement
- Maintain effective parent and community communications
Reporting & Meetings
- Compile and analyse termly grade results; report to Academic Head with recommendations
- Ensure accuracy of term reports, feedback, and personalised comments
- Moderate assessments across schools and share best practices within Curro
Teaching Responsibilities
- Teach assigned classes using innovative, interactive lessons
- Track attendance, manage homework and assessment schedules
- Prepare marking, feedback, and remedial interventions for learners needing support
- Uphold discipline and foster positive learner attitudes
- Offer extra lessons, remedial support, and individual tutoring as needed
Extramural Duties
- Organise and attend extramural activities, practices, fixtures, outings, grade, and phase meetings
- Maintain attendance registers for all activities
Professional Conduct:
- Demonstrate excellent organisation, teamwork, and interpersonal skills
- Respond to school communications within 24 hours
- Uphold punctuality, professionalism, and the Christian ethos and values of the school
Qualifications and experience
- BEd and/or PGCE in FET phase education, with an honours degree in education (in the relevant subject/s) advantageous
- 3–5 years as Department/Subject Matter Head, teaching a variety of grades including Matrics
- Knowledge of the IEB curriculum
- Proven facilitation, problem-solving and report-writing skills
- Excellent communication, organisational and planning skills
- Willing and able to work extended hours and weekends
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- SACE-registered
- Clear criminal record
