Job Purpose
- Operation of propulsion, auxiliary machinery and maintenance of the vessel, its machinery and equipment in compliance with the Chief Engineer’s and Second Engineer’s instructions.
- Engine room Watchkeeping Officer
- Perform other routine and maintenance activities, including breakdown maintenance, as directed by Second Engineer / Chief Engineer.
- The Third Engineer shall report to the Second Engineer / Chief Engineer such defects, non-conformances and other matters, which could affect safe fuel and sludge operations, or could present a risk of health and safety or pollution, quality to work or operational efficiency
Key Performance Areas
- Perform work routines in his/her area of responsibility and as directed by Second Engineer / Chief Engineer.
- Ensure that the generator engines are well maintained for optimum performance and fuel consumption. Any breakdown, failure or deviation should be brought to the attention of the Chief Engineer and Second Engineer
- Check stock of Generator & fuel injector spare parts to ensure that minimum requirements can be always kept.
- Maintain order and cleanliness in the generator engine room(s) and in other work areas.
- Work in conjunction with Third Navigational Officer to check and maintain emergency equipment inside machinery spaces.
- Ensuring that chemicals are used in a safe and responsible manner as per Material Safety Data Sheet instruction.
- To instruct and supervise on the vessel in the use of safety, environmental protection, firefighting, first aid and life-saving equipment.
- Safe efficient and cost-effective operations, maintenance and repair of the vessel and technical installations in accordance with the Chief Engineer’s & Second Engineer’s instructions, relevant legislation, and the Company’s SMS.
- The Third Engineer shall keep the Chief Engineer, the Shipboard Management Team and other functions on board well informed so that they can co-ordinate and control activities thereby maximising safety, quality and environmental protection.
- To take such measures to protect all persons, the environment, the vessel, her equipment, and cargo as deemed necessary by the observance of good seamanship and the circumstances of the case.
- Conducting his duties in the best interest of the company and as directed by the Second Engineer / Chief Engineer
Requirements
The ideal candidate
- Be a South African citizen and have a valid passport.
- Holds a valid SAMSA Certificate of Competency (CoC) as Officer in charge of an Engineering Watch (STCW Reg III/1)
- At least 1 (one) year experience as a third engineering officer
- Holds a valid SAMSA Medical Certificate (without restrictions or limitations).
- Technical and problem-solving skills, including technical report writing.
- Resolve environmental concerns and improve procedures relating to pollution prevention.
- Realise the need for management systems and procedures, particularly in areas of emergency, malfunction safety back up, contingency planning and protection of the environment.
- Personnel management and safety awareness
- Is fluent in written and spoken command of the English language.
- Able to follow Company instructions and procedures and able to deliver results and meet client expectations.
- A team player with a professional work ethic, managing a team on-board and work closely with management.
- Will comply to strict company and industry SHEQ standards and working habits.
- Adhere to the company confidentiality requirement and comply with a strict zero tolerance Alcohol & Drug Policy.
LEGISLATIVE COMPLIANCE
- Compliance with the requirements of the Merchant Shipping Act (MSA), MLC (Maritime Labour Convention) and STCW (Standards for Certification, Training, Certification and Watchkeeping).
- Compliance with the requirements of the POPIA (Protection of Personal Information Act)
- Compliance to the provisions of the Marine Living Resources Act (MLRA) 18 of 1998
- Has no criminal record with the SAPS (South African Police Service) Criminal Record Centre, and willingness to undergo a background check paid for and arranged by SAMSA MSP.
- Adhere to strict company confidentiality requirements.
- Adhere to a strict zero tolerance Alcohol & Drug Policy.
