Chinese firm Guangdong OPPO Mobile Telecommunications Corp, a subsidiary of BBK Electronics, officially launched in South Africa this week with three affordable smartphones.
OPPO in South Africa – What you need to know
OPPO – a world leader in smartphone manufacturing whose products “enhance the lives of more than 300 million people worldwide” – believes that technology is an art form.
“It’s not what you see but how you see it. Open your eyes and #MakeSomethingBeautiful. OPPO – one of the world’s leading smart device innovators – now in South Africa.”
To announce its launch in South Africa, OPPO introduced three affordable entry-level smartphones – the OPPO A72, A53 and A15s. The series features everything we’ve come to know and love about OPPO devices.
The A72 will be the first device to launch in South Africa on 7 October 2020, followed by the A53 and A15s on 7 November 2020. The devices will be available through Vodacom, with more retailers to follow in 2021.
A72 phone specifications
The A72 has a 6.5-inch 1080 Neo-Display display with a 90.5% ultra-high screen-to-body-ratio to create extraordinary visual effects. Neo Display technology eliminates the leakage of backlight in IPS LCD Display panels.
The ultra-narrow device measures only 1.73mm on the side. The device also features a 3D Quad-curve design with optimised curvature. The fingerprint unlock-button is situated on the side.
Furthermore, the screen automatically adjusts brightness “based on ambient light and your daily habits”. In addition, the A72 is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 chipset and 4GB RAM.
OPPO phones are known for the cameras and the A72 doesn’t fall by the wayside. It has no less than five lenses: A 48MP wide-angle lens, coupled with an 8MP ultra-fast sensor, a 2MP macro lens, and a 2MP depth sensor.
The camera setup is equipped with OPPO’s very own AI Beautification which includes a “delicate skin effect and smoother contour effect”. The AI also matches different skin tones in different scenes and lighting conditions.
The A72 has a punch hole in the top left corner of the front display that houses a 16MP selfie camera. The Android 10 device is also equipped with a powerful 5 000mAh battery; it supports 18W fast-charging too.
The OPPO A72 will be available in two colours: a “quiet Polar night (Twilight Black) and the dancing Aurora (Aurora Purple)”. The suggested retail price for the A71 is R6 999; however, more details will be shared on 7 October 2020.
