The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Cape Town have managed to catch yet another break in the killing of five men, by handcuffing two more teenagers for the crime.

According to police, the suspects, both 19-years-old, were hiding in Nkanini, Khayelitsha, which is where they were finally captured.

“The efforts of the provincial integrated team deployed in Phillipi East to quell incidents of violent crime have paid off with the arrest of two more teenagers in Khayelitsha last night for the murder of five young men in Phillipi East on 30 June 2020. The team followed vital information to the Nkanini informal settlement where they found the two suspects both 19 years of age hiding in a house. They were subsequently arrested on murder charges”, said Brigadier Novela Potelwa in a statement on Saturday, 11 July 2020.

The latest arrests come merely days after three suspects, aged between 18 and 20, were taken into custody by police for the killings.

“On Thursday, 09 July 2020, police swooped on a 20-year-old suspect also in connection with the Phillipi murders. The first two arrests were of 18 and 19-yearold suspects apprehended on Main Road in Delft on Monday, 06 July 2020”, Potelwa further said.

On 30 June 2020, seven suspects are alleged to have stormed a house in Block 4 in Phillipi East and fired several shots randomly at the people inside. Five young men were killed in the incident.

The level of violence in Cape Town townships has been one of government’s main concerns in handling crime across the country

Other suspects still on the loose

Police are now looking for the sixth suspect, however there has been no word from them on the seventh person implicated in the homicide investigation.

“The two arrests of Friday evening bring the number of arrested suspects for the Phillipi East murders to five. Meanwhile police are hot on the heels of a sixth suspect as part of the multiple murder investigation”

“The two arrested suspects are expected to appear in court on Monday. Provincial SAPS management has applauded the determination of police members who ensured the perpetrators were brought to book”
