Strategic Management and Leadership
- Work together with the Board of Directors and the Senior Executive Management team to develop, implement and evaluate the strategic direction of MWRI
- Supervise and mentor senior staff to ensure quality work and accountability to our stakeholders
- Ensure the operationalisation of and adherence to, all MWRI’s policies and procedures
- Create a supportive environment that fosters personal responsibility and commitment to MWRI’s goals and values
- Oversee the development of a strategic human resource strategy for the organisation
- Direct and manage the overall operations of MWRI in South Africa and regionally
- Oversee the financial management of the organisation and be responsible for ensuring quality and integrity of the systems and policies
- Oversee the management of contracts, procurement, and operations
- Oversee the implementation of the human resource strategy
- Support and provide oversight to the organisation’s management team with regards to all programme planning, budgeting, documentation and monitoring
- Ensure timely, accurate and quality financial and narrative reporting and ensuring that the organisation is compliant with all donor requirements
- Ensure efficient and functioning operation systems in cooperation with the management team
- Develop improved links, communication and synergies within all of MWRI’s programmes
- Implement and foster adherence to the established MWRI policies, regulations, guidelines and procedures and strengthen transparent governance
- Contribute effectively to the overall strategic visioning, conceptual development, planning and monitoring of MWRI’s work
- In collaboration with the Senior Executive Management team, appoint senior leadership, while work together with the management team concerning the recruitment of all other employees
- Ensure statutory compliance
Internal and External Relations
- Facilitate internal processes for MWRI staff that build skills and commitment to organisational values and social justice
- Demonstrate effective, values driven leadership to all MWRI staff
- Foster a conducive environment that is transparent, accountable and supportive
- Represent MWRI at national processes and events in South Africa and regionally where required
- Manage donor relations in collaboration with the Senior Executive Management team
- The Community Services manager, Community education and training manager, Monitoring and Evaluation manager, Human Resource Manager and the Finance Manager will report directly to the Deputy Director
- A strong commitment to, and passion for, the principles and practice of gender equality and women’s human rights
- A post-graduate degree in the social sciences, human rights, or an equivalent professional qualification with significant relevance to the women’s rights sector
- Knowledge of national, international and regional women’s rights issues.
- Minimum of 10 years’ professional experience, with a minimum of five years’ executive leadership experience, working to influence human rights laws, policies and institutions with a strong emphasis on community development programmes
- Knowledge and experience of the NGO sector will be an advantage
- Experience of project and programme management with significant financial and budget management responsibility
- Knowledge and understanding of Rights Based Approaches and programming, including the design and implementation of successful human rights programs, campaigns and initiatives.
- Experience of working across African countries and the Global South is not a prerequisite but will be advantageous
- Strong organisational and administrative skills
- Strong analytical and conceptual skills with the ability to see both the big picture as well as micro issues
- Interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively, flexibly and effectively in a small, dynamic team
- Ability to think and act quickly, creatively and strategically under pressure
- A strong history displaying personal integrity and transparency
- Oral and written communication in English is essential with the ability to synthesize, understand and communicate complex issues effectively and in a timely fashion
- Ability to communicate in IsiXhosa and Afrikaans will be an advantage
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and social media
- The capacity to travel regionally and international, sometimes at short notice
